Are you ready to start our lesson? Is everybody here? It’s a good day today, isn’t it? It’s time to start. Today we are going to talk about things which are interesting for everybody – about hobbies. Nowadays it’s hard to name all the activities, entertainments and hobbies practiced by people in their free time. Some people have animals as hobby. Others are mad about their cars or motorbikes. Many young people enjoy surfing the Internet or playing computer games. TV, sports, music – there are too many hobbies and too little time. And do you have much free time? What is your favorite hobby? Why do you like your hobby? Are there any hobbies you would like to try?Which hobbies do you think are the most difficult?Which hobbies are more suitable for men, women and for both?Teacher: Now, let’s read about two different hobbies, work in two groups: group 1 – read about Steven, group two – read about Sandra. Answer the questions about your person:What is his/her hobby? Why did he/she get into it?Does it take up all his/her spare time? Is it easy to practice? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each hobby?Does he/she enjoy it? Why?What other things does he/she enjoy?STEVENI first picked up a racquet at the age of seven. Then in my teens, I had to make the choice between tennis and badminton because I loved both sports. Eventually, I chose badminton and I don’t regret taking it up. Four to five million people throughout Hungary play badminton – that’s more than the number of those who play tennis and golf put together! You have to work hard to be good at it. I train every day of the week, and holidays are very rare for me. I do fitness training in the gym, as well as practice a lot to improve my speed. And then of course, there are toutnaments to take part in nearly every weekend. So I have to travel all over the country and abroad. I always keep my suitcase packed for the trip. My ambition is to represent Hungary in the Olympics.I think badminton is the best pastime. It is easy to pick up, it’s cheap to play, there’s no expensive equipment needed, and it is not affected by the weather – like so many other sports. I also enjoys lots of other things. I like going to discos, nightclubbing, or listening to music – Madonna is my favorite at the moment.GlossarySpare time – free timeValuable – worth a lot of moneyTo miss – not to noticeIn my teens – when I was between 13 and 19To take part – to participateAmbition – something that you want to do or achieve very muchTo pick up – to learn by chance, without any effort SANDRAI think that if you are interested in something, you do it with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I enjoy collecting stamps and this takes up all my spare time. For me collecting stamps is not just buying them. You learn a lot about different people and events. But you have to find time to read a lot. Unfortunately, this hobby is very expensive and you cannot buy all the stamps you want.To be a good stamp collector, you need to have a good eye for detail. That’s because if you notice any printing mistake on a stamp, it becomes more unique and valuable. Whether the mistake is in the printing or the design, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that you notice something which many people miss! It is very exiting! When a stamp is issued and there is a printing mistake in it, a new stamp appears and the old one becomes very rare and valuable.Teacher: look through the questions again and fill in the table about your person. Work in pairs with a student from a different group, compare your notes and exchange information. Speak about the similarities and differences. Use the tips.Questions:StevenSandra … Similarities:Both Steven and Sandra are very …, they …They are usually …They are both very … so they very seldom/often …Sandra and Steven are … but they sometimes …They can also …Differences:Unlike Steven, who likes … Sandra enjoy …She is/has … while he is/has …Though they both are … Sandra … and Steven …But they are …Teacher: You are going to listen to the people talking about their strange hobbies. Look at the pictures and guess what the people enjoy doing in their spare time (student’s book “Up & Up”, page 35).Now listen to the people and do your best to understand why they enjoy their hobbies and why other people do not like them. Fill in the table:HobbyThings to likeThings to dislikeTapescriptMelody WilliamsI took up scotch tape art about two years ago. My creations include shoes, cards, clocks, picture frames and even sculptures. This hobby is completely original. You need imagination and creative outlook. I enjoy this hobby because now I can say there are things in my life I have made myself. Once I made a model of Shakespeare’s theatre, which is now a home for my pet turtle. Most people aren’t quite sure about their attitude to my hobby. They laugh and mock at me. They say the scotch tape is sticky and you can have a lot of problems with it. But I think it’s no problem at all if you enjoy the things you do.Tracy WallaceCollecting is a popular pastime for many people. I collect valentine cards and postcards, but collecting plastic spoons is really interesting and unusual. I think it’s fun to have something like that. My first one come from the plane when I first travelled with my parents to Italy. Now I have dozens – white, blue, yellow – different colors and shapes. The most difficult thing about colleting such things is to make your mother believe that they are clean. I have to keep her from throwing them away. And she always says that they are all over the place although I keep them in boxes and label them which takes a lot of time. I usually don’t tell people about my hobby, but when I do, they act as if I am crazy.Tim Miller Have you ever met anybody who wears a red nose and funny shoes? That’s me! I’m a clown! I started clowning around at kids’ birthday parties and now I can paint faces, ride a unicycle, juggle and do magic tricks. My job is connected with industry and finance, so clowning is a good contrast to all the financial stuff going round in my brain. I love this hobby, I learned how to stay in front of audience and it made me sure of myself. Some people say I’m not serious enough, but I think that in the fast and serious world we live in, clowning is a way to relax and have fun.Teacher: Listen again and check. What do you think about such hobbies? Do you think they are strange? Why? Why not? Teacher: Now work I pairs. Tell your friend about your hobby. Follow the plan. What is your hobby? Is it easy to find time for your hobby? What training do you have to do?Why do you like it? What do you enjoy most about it?Can you recommend it to other young people? Why?Useful language:I like/ enjoy …I think it is …I do/play it with … because …It’s cheap to … (play)It’s easy to … (learn)I have to … (travel, take part in …, keep … etc.)Teacher: Well done, thank you for work. We’ve talked about different hobbies, including strange ones, about their advantages and disadvantages, about if they are easy to practice and why people enjoy them. We compared your notes and exchanged information we talked about differences and similarities of different hobbies. You told about your hobbies. Here are your marks: … Have you got any questions?Teacher: Next time I would like to hear your stories about your hobbies. And just like you, your friends and your relatives, celebrities have some interesting hobbies. Your celebrity is no exception. Perhaps one of his/ her hobbies will inspire you to take up a new hobby of your own! Find some interesting photos and collect the following data from the Internet, books and magazines:What is her/his hobby/hobbies is/are;When and how he/she started it;If this hobby expensive;Where he/she does it;Why he/she does it.Is there any information above that you cannot find?
